Roger
Gilbertson and The Robot Store
"It's
the prodigal son story, it's the Frankenstein story, it's the Golem. It's
our own
creation, our own hand-work, going out into the universe and coming
back to us in some new and surprising way."
Roger
Gilbertson has been a frequent guest on "But Seriously..." because
he's always eloquent and witty, as well as informative. He is the proprietor
of The Robot Store, offering
all things robotic (kits, books, videos), especially for the home hobbyist,
and also Mondo-tronics, which
markets a shape-memory alloy called Muscle Wires, which can function as muscles
in robots. Having recently attended a Stanford symposium entitled "Will
Spiritual Robots replace humanity by 2100?" Roger and I discussed the
prospect and the fear of future advancements in robotics and artificial intelligence.

wherein we discuss the fear of technology: is the planet big enough for both
us and our silicon-based offspring?
-
on the difference between spirituality and religion, and just what it would
mean to have a "spiritual" robot anyway
